The fish oil industry is actively involved in extensive research and exploration, highlighting the potential of these various by-products across various sectors. Applications include the synthesis of alkyl ketene dimers (AKD) for papermaking, biolubricant production, and the use of fish oil as a fuel for diesel engines.

Potential products from pangasius

Vietnam's pangasius industry has gone beyond its role as just a high-value export industry, becoming an important and stable source of global supply to meet growing international market demand. The appeal of pangasius meat goes beyond its delicious taste, and includes unique features in terms of form and nutritional quality. The combination of significant annual aquaculture production and strong growth in the Pangasius export processing industry provides the basis for a large potential for fish oil production, particularly derived from by-products this industry, especially the catfish fat part.

Pangasius fish

Pangasius fish, a member of the Pangasiidae family, scientifically labeled Pangasius hypothalamus, has special characteristics. Its elongated, scaleless body and smooth skin, along with its small blue-gray head, large eyes, and two pairs of antennae in its mouth, contribute to its unique characteristics. Pangasius can reach a maximum length of 130 cm and weigh up to 44 kg. Found mainly in freshwater areas of Southeast Asia, pangasius display omnivorous tendencies with a clear preference for food of animal origin.

The role of Pangasius in Vietnamese exports

In the context of Vietnam, the pangasius farming industry follows a strong development trajectory, especially in the Mekong Delta region, which accounts for up to 75% of the country's total    pangasius production. Strategic raw material management, towards sustainable production, is a tool to maintain stability and promote sustainable development throughout the supply chain.

Vietnam, the world's leading exporter of pangasius, has enjoyed spectacular success on the international stage. In the record year 2019, Vietnam exported pangasius to 131 markets, reaching a staggering $1.61 billion, or 80.4 percent of the total export value. The main destination markets for Vietnamese pangasius are China – Hong Kong, the United States, the European Union, ASEAN countries, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Japan.

Pangasius fat compartments have become the mainstay of the fish oil industry, accounting for 15-25% of the total weight of the fish. This high fat content is an important byproduct of the Pangasius production line, with annual production estimates ranging from 250 to 300,000 tons. The fish oil industry is actively involved in extensive research and exploration, highlighting the potential of these various by-products across various sectors. Applications include the synthesis of alkyl ketene dimers (AKD) for papermaking, biolubricant production, and the use of fish oil as a fuel for diesel engines.

VASEP said that pangasius export in the first half of this year faced many difficulties due to world fluctuations, the impact of taking advantage of food prices as well as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In the second half of 2023, the reduction rate will gradually decrease over the same period. In addition, more positive demand entering the ordering season for year-end consumption and major festivals will also help Vietnamese pangasius exports have more orders.
