THE TECHNIQUES FOR EXTRACTING COCONUT OIL

Thứ năm, 21/12/2023 - 10:37 AM

Coconut oil products obtained from different techniques, will have different properties and finished products and correspond to different needs. Basic consists of 2 main groups: dry extract and wet extract, corresponding to 4 popular coconut oils on the market:

- Crude coconut oil: is produced from copra by pressing and filtering process. It cannot be used directly as cooking oil or human food. Crude coconut oil is a raw material for refining, producing cooking oil and biofuel, and other industrial products.

- Pure coconut oil (VCO) from cold centrifugation / cold oil technique: is a product obtained by wet extraction technique through centrifugal system, separating oil from the mixture, preserving the superior natural properties. The coconut oil extracted using this technique is the product of the highest quality present, both in terms of medicinal composition. With a gentle, transparent shallot aroma. Due to extraction using non-heating technology, pure coconut oil is often difficult to store and has a shorter stability time than other oil products. One of the factors that greatly affects the quality of pure coconut oil is the storage material and direct light

- Pure coconut oil (VCO) from hot centrifugation / hot oil technique: is a product obtained by dry extraction technique, pressed squeezed from heat-dried grated coconut, and then centrifuged again. In terms of morphology, this product looks similar to cold oil, the color is slightly yellow, but the taste is somewhat harsher (due to the fact that the material has passed the prolonged stage of thermal drying).

- Refined coconut oil (RBD): undergoes a refining process that includes bleaching and deodorizing to remove impurities, as well as the characteristic flavor and aroma of coconut oil. This refining process produces a neutral and odorless coconut oil with a high smoke point suitable for cooking. Also used in skin care products and moisturizing properties.

The International Coconut Community (ICC) assesses that Vietnamese coconuts have the highest yield and quality in the world, but the actual value brought from coconut trees is not commensurate with that assessment. The current business trend of the company is to create end-to-end products, limit raw exports or only participate in one main stage of the value chain in the outsourcing style. Therefore, the application of science and technology to increase the value of coconut products in general and coconut oil in particular is a strategic direction to ensure output products have high quality standards, are widely used and have a sustainable market.
