MD2 pineapple is considered one of the selective hybrid products between Queen pineapple and Cayenne pineapple. Therefore, it has most of the outstanding advantages of both parent breeds. It is SWEET, CRISPY and FRAGRANT (like Queen). Large fruit with shallow eye sockets, low bromelain content (like Cayenne pineapple). The distinguishing characteristic of MD2's appearance is the cylindrical fruit and dark green buds; The leaf edges do not have thorns (like Cayenne), when ripe the skin and flesh are bright yellow.

Some things to note when exporting fresh pineapples

Information on the quality requirements for each variety can be found in: United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Pineapple Standard; Pineapple standards in Codex Alimentarius, the ‘food code’ of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); General Standard on Marketing Regulation (EU) No 543/2011.

At least, pineapples need to have the following standards:

- Whole, with or without crown

- Healthy, meaning the product is not crushed or damaged.

- Clean, without any foreign matter on the pineapple

- There are practically no pests

- Pineapple flesh is not damaged by worms

- Looks fresh and delicious

- There is no abnormal humidity outside

- No strange smell and/or taste.

- Transportation and distribution must be consistent with the ripening process of the pineapple.

The European quality standard in Regulation (EC) No 1580/2007 stipulates that the import of fresh fruit and vegetables from third countries into the European Union (EU) must comply with the EU Marketing Standard or equivalent.

Pineapples are not ripened after harvest. Exposure of unripe pineapple to ethylene from other fruits (e.g. bananas) may soften the pineapple, but it will not make it sweeter.
